Starbucks, the well-known American coffeehouse chain, has teamed up with Finnish company Huhtamaki, a leader in sustainable packaging, to test compostable cups for cold beverages.
This initiative aims to reduce plastic waste in the U.S., where approximately 141 million tons of plastic packaging waste are generated annually, accounting for about 40% of total plastic waste.
The initiative is part of Starbucks' strategic plan to achieve its 2030 goal of making all consumer-facing packaging 100% reusable, recyclable, or compostable. In the 2022 fiscal year, only 49% of Starbucks' packaging met these criteria. In partnership with Huhtamaki, the company has developed opaque fiber-based cups, which are currently being tested at select locations in California and Minnesota. Huhtamaki, the world's largest producer of molded fiber, continues to refine its technologies, creating products that meet modern sustainability requirements. In recent years, the company has expanded its operations into the U.S. and other markets, providing precise solutions such as tightly fitting cup lids.
