Significant Improvement in Milk Quality in Rondônia Over Recent Years
In recent years, milk quality in the Brazilian state of Rondônia has significantly improved, as evidenced by the increase in compliance with quality standards. According to studies by Embrapa, the percentage of milk tanks meeting the regulatory bacterial count standards rose from 36% in 2015 to 72.6% in 2022. This indicates a substantial enhancement in the management and hygiene practices on dairy farms.
The Contagem Padrão em Placas (CPP), a key indicator of bacterial content in milk, showed marked improvement. During the rainy season, the bacterial load reduced by 69.1%, and during the dry season, it fell by 76.7%. These reductions highlight consistent improvements regardless of seasonal conditions.
The Programme Nacional da Qualidade do Leite (PNQL) facilitated this progress by evaluating 566 milk storage tanks in 2015 and 536 in 2022, across major milk-producing regions in Rondônia. The findings suggest an increase in the availability of high-quality milk that meets industry standards.
This transformation is attributed to the collaborative efforts of researchers, producers, technical experts, and the dairy industry, emphasizing the adoption of best agricultural practices throughout the production chain. The studies also noted that certain dairy companies have started offering bonus payments to suppliers who meet superior quality standards, indicating an economic incentive for quality improvements.
Moreover, a pilot project demonstrated the potential for further enhancement by implementing appropriate management and sanitary control practices, achieving over a 95% reduction in bacterial content. This suggests that while significant progress has been made, there is still room for further improvement at individual farms.
The developments in Rondônia underscore the importance of technical assistance, training, and continuous improvement procedures, which not only enhance milk quality but also expand the number of producers capable of meeting increasingly stringent standards.
