Pioneering Organic Goat Farming in the UK
Piper Hole Farm, located in Ravenstonedale, near Kirkby Stephen, has become a testament to innovative farming under the stewardship of Frank Hunter.

"The goats themselves are individuals," says Frank, highlighting the personal connection he shares with the animals.

Run alongside his wife Ruth and daughter Georgia, the farm initially introduced goats to supply milk for lambs. This practical decision has since evolved into an enterprise revolving around cheese and soap production. The farm, around 70 acres in size, is home to approximately 90 goats, predominantly Saanen and British Alpine breeds, alongside 20 sheep and five dairy cows. The family employs holistic farming practices, avoiding fertilizers and promoting biodiversity, particularly on its SSSI meadow.

Piper Hole's approach ensures its produce, including the notable Emma Rose Goats Milk Soap and a variety of cheeses such as plain, smoked, and rosemary-infused, reflects a commitment to quality and sustainability. Frank's journey, enriched by learnings from global cheese connoisseurs, underscores the farm's presence in media and at markets, amplifying its reach. Looking ahead, Frank is keen on securing organic certification, positioning Piper Hole as the only organic dairy goat farm producing its own cheese in the UK.

"The fats and solids are so good, you can't help but make good quality cheese," he proudly asserts. As Frank plans to pass the farm onto his daughter Georgia, Piper Hole Farm's narrative is one of sustainability, community, and passion for exceptional produce.
