On Global Dairy Trade in India and Turkey

India
India’s rapid expansion in butter exports is particularly striking:
In 2024, India increased its butter exports more than 2.5 times, reaching 51,800 tonnes (in 100% fat equivalent), marking a strong recovery after a sharp decline in 2023 trade.
The Middle East was the primary destination last year, accounting for 62% of India’s total butter exports.
Turkey
Turkey has seen overall growth in export volumes, with notable recovery in whey powder trade:
-
In 2024, Turkey’s dairy exports rose by 32% compared to the previous year, following the 2023 drought. However, they still remain 19% below the peak levels of 2022 (in dry matter equivalent).
-
Whey powder exports increased by 150%, reaching 88,000 tonnes, which represents 5.5% of global trade. Key destinations included Southeast Asia, North Africa, and China, with particularly strong growth in late 2024.
-
Skimmed Milk Powder (SMP) exports grew almost fourfold in 2024, reaching 22,200 tonnes, reflecting a renewed upward trend in raw milk production after 2023. However, export volumes are still nearly half of the 2022 level. The main export market remains North Africa.
