A coalition of North Coast Nationals MPs has initiated a community petition urging the Minns Labor Government to reinstate Norco Milk in health facilities across Northern NSW and the Mid North Coast Local Health Districts. The petition, spearheaded by Member for Clarence Richie Williamson, Deputy Leader and Member for Coffs Harbour Gurmesh Singh, and Member for Oxley Michael Kemp, was launched at Andrew Wilson’s dairy farm in Lismore.
The MPs emphasized the profound impact that the removal of Norco Milk fr om regional health facilities has on local farmers and their communities. Norco, a 100% farmer-owned cooperative, has been a staple in Northern NSW, supplying high-quality dairy products from the region’s lush green pastures for decades.
“We are calling on the Minns Labor Government to listen to our communities instead of making decisions from Sydney that directly impact us,” the MPs stated. “Norco is more than just a brand; it represents the livelihoods of 191 farming families who rely on this Lismore-based cooperative. The removal of this contract could lead to serious consequences, including potential job losses and reduced income for these families.”
The petition underscores the long-standing partnership between Norco and regional health facilities, which stretches from Tweed to Port Macquarie. It advocates for the importance of supporting local businesses and maintaining the economic vitality of the region.
The North Coast Nationals MPs are rallying residents to sign the petition, aiming to send a strong message to the NSW Labor Government about the necessity of backing local dairy farmers.
“We need to stand together and make our voices heard,” the MPs urged. “The government’s decision not only affects our local farmers but also undermines the community’s trust in decisions made without local consultation. By signing this petition, we can ensure that our local dairy farmers are supported and that Norco Milk remains in our health facilities wh ere it belongs.”
This campaign highlights the critical role of local agricultural enterprises like Norco in the region's economy and seeks to restore the cooperative's presence in public health institutions, reinforcing the connection between community support and sustainable local farming.
