The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development in Nigeria is set to launch a Dairy Training Institute to enhance skills across the dairy value chain.

The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development (FMLD) in Nigeria has unveiled plans to establish a Dairy Training Institute aimed at bolstering capacity in the dairy value chain. This announcement was made by the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, during a stakeholders' meeting held in Abuja. The minister highlighted the necessity of technical training to close the knowledge gap in dairy farming, emphasizing the institute’s role in equipping both new and seasoned dairy farmers with crucial skills.
Maiha stated, "This training institute will provide hands-on knowledge in pasture cultivation, feed and fodder management, dairy animal husbandry, health management, animal breeding, milk collection, preservation, and transportation. If we want a thriving dairy sector, we must empower those working at the heart of it."
Additionally, the minister commended NESTLÉ Nigeria for its dedication to local dairy industry development, particularly their initiative to promote indigenous cattle breeds. He mentioned efforts to curb milk adulteration and revamp grazing reserves to manage cattle movement in urban areas.
Maiha further remarked, "If we are serious about commercial dairy farming in Nigeria, we must put the right structures in place. That includes proper grazing reserves, organised milk collection systems, and stronger regulations against milk adulteration."
Victoria Ndee Uwadoka from NESTLÉ Nigeria reported that the company has aggregated over 1.65 million liters of milk between 2021 and 2024, and operates a modern dairy demonstration farm, commissioned by the Minister in February 2025, in the Paikon Kore grazing reserve.
