Nestlé Achieves Significant Emissions Reduction in Dairy Supply Chain

Nestlé has announced a substantial decrease in greenhouse gas emissions within its dairy supply chain, achieving a 26% reduction since 2018. This achievement was detailed in the company's inaugural Dairy Plan report, which outlines ongoing efforts to enhance the sustainability of dairy production globally. The Dairy Plan report reveals that Nestlé is collaborating with 130,000 dairy farmers, over 200 suppliers, and industry partners in more than 40 countries to promote sustainable dairy practices and ensure the long-term viability of farming businesses.

Emissions Reduction Efforts

The report highlights Nestlé's strategies to cut emissions, including a 25% reduction in methane emissions across its dairy value chain by 2025, compared to 2018 levels. These reductions are largely attributed to the adoption of lower-carbon feed and improved manure management practices. Nestlé is working with its Institute of Agricultural Sciences and various academic and government research institutions to develop science-based technologies aimed at reducing emissions from cow digestion and manure.

Regenerative Agriculture and Farmer Support

Nestlé's report emphasizes the progress in regenerative agriculture, with the company sourcing over 34% of its dairy from farms using practices such as soil cover, minimum tillage, and tree integration by 2025. These methods are designed to improve soil health, support biodiversity, and enhance water management, making farms more resilient to environmental challenges.

In addition to environmental initiatives, Nestlé is investing in animal welfare through improved nutrition, veterinary care, and cooling systems, aiming to increase milk quality and farm productivity. The company is also providing training in technical farming, financial management, and business skills to help farmers strengthen the commercial viability of their operations.

Innovative Solutions and Future Prospects

Katja Seidenschnur, Nestlé's Head of Sustainability for the Nutrition & Health business, stated that the Dairy Plan demonstrates the interconnectedness of productivity, milk quality, and sustainability, and how these can positively reinforce each other. Seidenschnur noted that through collaboration, Nestlé is deploying innovative solutions and technologies to help farmers build resilience to climate change and economic pressures, while also securing long-term access to high-quality milk and dairy ingredients.

Farmers involved in the program are converting manure into renewable energy and compost, which helps reduce emissions, lower energy costs, and create additional income streams. Digital tools are also being employed to enable farmers to make more informed decisions and access further learning opportunities, making farming more attractive to future generations by providing stable and profitable career prospects.
