Global food companies like Nestlé and Mars are driving a significant transformation in the dairy supply chain with a focus on regenerative agriculture by 2030. They are investing $2.61 billion to meet stringent greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and Scope Three reporting goals. The primary drivers of change in New Zealand’s dairy sector are not consumers but global food industry leaders.
Nestlé and Mars Lead $2.61 Billion Regenerative Dairy Initiative

By 2030, Nestlé aims to procure 50% of its key ingredients from farms that use regenerative agriculture. As of 2024, the company has already achieved 21.3% of this target, working with over 150,000 farmers across 25 countries. The SAI Platform, which includes companies like Fonterra, Lactalis, and Synlait, plays a crucial role in standardizing these practices.

The SAI Platform defines regenerative agriculture as an approach that enhances soil health, biodiversity, climate, and water resources while improving farmer livelihoods. Nestlé utilizes the SAI Platform’s Regenerating Together Framework to guide its policies, listing 17 practices such as cover crops and integrated pasture management.

In partnership with Fonterra and Dairy Trust Taranaki, Nestlé is financing New Zealand’s first commercially viable Net Zero dairy farm. This project aims for a 30% emissions intensity reduction by 2026-27 and a 10-year goal to achieve net zero emissions.
