Minnesota farmers, facing a heatwave, are employing advanced technology to maintain the health and productivity of their dairy cows. Systems like cow manager apps and sprinkler systems are being utilized to monitor and control cattle body temperatures.
Minnesota Farmers Use Technology to Protect Dairy Cows from Heat Stress

In Minnesota, where summer heatwaves pose significant challenges, farmers are turning to technology to ensure the well-being of their dairy cows. Dan Glessing, from Glessing Family Farm near Howard Lake, has been actively using technology to manage his livestock's response to the extreme heat. As temperatures climb into the mid-90s, which is uncomfortable for cattle, maintaining their cool becomes crucial to sustain milk production.

Technological Solutions for Heat Management

To tackle this issue, Glessing has integrated a cow manager system into his routine. This system connects to an orange tag in each cow's ear, allowing Glessing to monitor their body temperatures via his phone. 'Technology has come a long way in the last 10 years,' Glessing noted, pointing out the system's ability to alert him to temperature spikes, enabling timely intervention.

Beyond temperature monitoring, Glessing has installed 50-inch fans to improve air circulation within the barn. He also emphasizes the importance of water, akin to human needs during hot weather. The cows have access to a 'cow sprinkler' system that activates based on rising temperatures, providing a cooling effect similar to sprinklers for humans.

Impact on Livestock Health and Production

These efforts are aimed at reducing heat stress, which can negatively impact dairy production. According to Glessing, when these measures are in place, 'You can see that they aren't panting or huffing, so that's a good sign that they cool down overnight.' This proactive approach not only ensures the cows' comfort but also helps maintain their milk output during peak heat.

In addition to dairy cows, Glessing applies similar measures for his beef cattle, ensuring they have adequate shade, bedding, and water throughout the day. This holistic approach to livestock management during extreme weather conditions highlights the evolving role of technology in modern farming practices.
