Haveri's dairy sector is grappling with severe milk quality issues triggered by adulteration practices. Despite producing 1.3 lakh litres of milk daily, only 20,000 litres are packaged for sale, owing to quality concerns. Allegations have surfaced that some cooperative societies adulterate milk with water, sugar, and urea before it reaches the union.

The adulteration has led to significant rejections, such as 12,000 litres being turned away at the Kumbh Mela and deliveries refused by Goan authorities. The district boasts 445 milk cooperative societies, out of which 240 have self-operating testing centers, yet these challenges persist.

The administrative body of the Haveri milk union has committed to rectifying these adulteration practices as it works towards ensuring quality and regaining market trust. The current situation results in substantial financial losses, as large quantities of milk are redirected for other uses and schemes.

The separation from Dharwad Milk Union and subsequent administrative hurdles have further compounded these issues, necessitating intervention from the Karnataka Milk Federation to regain market footing.
