The decline in raw milk production in Japan over the past 20 years will continue into the next decade. This was announced to The DairyNews by the president of the Japanese corporation Morinaga milk Industry, Yohichi Onuki, during the World Dairy Summit, held in Chicago from October 15 to 19.

Japan's raw milk production was 7.6 million tons in 2022, down 10.4%, from 8.5 million tons in 2000, Mr. Onuka said. According to Morinaga milk industry forecasts, by 2030 production could fall to 7.1 million tons.
Over 22 years, the number of dairy farms in Japan has decreased by 62.5% - to 12.6 thousand farms. The country's livestock decreased by 22.8% - to 1 million 365 thousand heads. The number of dairy animals decreased by almost 28% - to 714.5 thousand heads.
At the same time, the average farm population increased to 56.7 animals compared to 29.5 in 2000. Over 22 years, milk yield per cow increased by 24% and amounted to 10.661 tons per cow per year.
