King Island Dairy, a cherished Tasmanian cheese producer with a history spanning over 120 years, is set to close its doors by mid-2024, as announced by its Canadian owner, Saputo. The closure follows a 10-month strategic review that explored all possible options for the facility, which produces premium cheeses like brie and blue vein.

Saputo’s chief operating officer, Leanne Cutts, emphasized that the decision was not made lightly, citing the need to maintain competitiveness in an evolving market. Despite King Island Dairy's strong local roots and iconic status in Australia, the business has struggled to keep pace with today's highly competitive food industry.

The closure will affect 58 employees, though Saputo has committed to exploring redeployment opportunities. Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff expressed disappointment over the decision and affirmed the government's support for the affected workers, farmers, and the wider community. The state is also willing to assist in finding a potential new operator for the facility.

Saputo, one of the world's top 10 dairy processors, acquired King Island Dairy in 2019 as part of its purchase of Lion Dairy & Drinks' cheese business. Despite the closure, the company's other Tasmanian brands, such as Mersey Valley and Tasmanian Heritage, continue to thrive.
