Fonterra has been acknowledged for its significant advancements in sustainable packaging, achieving 'Leading' status under the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) standards, as detailed in its 2024 Annual Report. This recognition underscores Fonterra's commitment to reducing the environmental impact of its packaging processes.
APCO, an organization dedicated to improving packaging sustainability across Australia, collaborates with industry and government entities to hold companies accountable across various sustainability metrics, including governance, strategy, recoverability, the use of problematic materials, and design & procurement practices.
Jenny Phillips, Fonterra’s Sustainability Packaging Manager for Global Markets, highlighted the critical role that APCO plays in steering the industry toward more sustainable packaging solutions in Australia. “Since last year, we have improved our APCO performance rating from 74 percent to 79 percent, with significant progress in two key areas – Disposal Labelling and Recycled Content,” Phillips stated.
In the Disposal Labelling category, Fonterra has advanced from ‘Advanced’ to ‘Beyond Best Practice,’ with 96 percent of its consumer products now featuring the Australasian Recycling Label (ARL). This label provides consumers with clear and consistent recycling information, aiding in better recycling practices and supporting the shift towards a circular economy.
Additionally, Fonterra made strides in the Recycled Content category, moving from ‘Leading’ to ‘Advanced.’ This progress is largely due to its collaboration with the PACT Group and Circular Plastics Australia, focusing on validating the food safety and quality aspects of recycled materials used in milk bottles.
Fonterra also maintained ‘Beyond Best Practice’ ratings in Governance & Strategy and Design & Procurement, reflecting the successful integration of sustainability principles into its overall business strategy. This adherence to the Sustainable Packaging Guidelines for both new and existing packaging underscores Fonterra's ongoing dedication to sustainable development.
“Sustainability is at the core of our strategy in Australia, and we’re pleased that APCO has recognized our efforts,” Phillips said. “Improving packaging sustainability across the supply chain is a significant challenge, and there’s still much work ahead. We currently have 28 sustainable packaging projects in progress and remain committed to achieving our goal of 100 percent reusable, recyclable, or compostable packaging for all our dairy products by the end of 2025.”
Fonterra’s continued investment in sustainable packaging solutions reflects its broader commitment to environmental stewardship and leadership within the dairy industry.
