Financial Crisis Hits Dairy Farmers in Ancud
Approximately 70 families involved in milk production in Ancud, Chile, are facing severe economic challenges due to mounting debt from the company Chilolac de Ancud. This issue, simmering for the past year, has worsened since October 2024, with the company failing to pay local producers.
Manifestation Planned
The president of a local trade organization, Miguel Oyarzo, announced plans for a peaceful protest in Ancud's town square. "We plan to give away milk to supporters who come to help and make them aware of the difficulties we are facing," Oyarzo stated. The demonstration aims to highlight the two to three months of unpaid milk production from Chilolac.
Impact on Producers
Every producer sells around 400 liters of milk daily, and the owed amounts range from 2 million pesos upwards, depending on production volume. Many are forced into drastic measures, including giving away milk meant to sustain their livelihood, due to financial strain.
