On Europe Day, May 9th, a landmark event will take place in Kyiv where the European Dairy Association (EDA) and the Union of Dairy Enterprises of Ukraine (SMPU) will sign a memorandum of understanding.

This significant meeting will also see the introduction of the SMPU EU Integration Committee, marking a critical step towards enhancing the Ukrainian dairy industry's integration into the European market.

The EDA, a staunch advocate for European unity, emphasizes the success of the European lactosphere—which includes a smoothly functioning single market, a robust trade policy, and a fortified Common Agricultural Policy. These elements are vital for supporting transformative changes across the continent.

The ongoing conflict with Russia has severely impacted Ukraine, particularly its dairy sector, which is a vital component of both economic and social infrastructure in the region. In response, the European Union's implementation of the Autonomous Trade Measures—eliminating tariffs and quotas—has facilitated the integration of authorized Ukrainian dairy products and approved dairies into the EU single market.

The memorandum between EDA and SMPU aims to bolster the DCFTA (Ukraine-EU free trade agreement) and support Ukraine's accession negotiations. It establishes a cooperative framework within the SMPU EU Integration Committee to enhance the Ukrainian dairy sector's productivity and quality, boost consumer demand, and facilitate an exchange of best practices and standards in legislation, retail, and marketing within the dairy sector.

Additionally, the partnership will create a "Ukrainian dairy needs" list as part of the EU's "Rapid Damage and Needs Assessment" within the Ukraine Facility Programme. This collaborative effort also sets the stage for an ongoing UKR-EU dairy dialogue focused on integrating Ukrainian agriculture into the future EU Common Agricultural Policy (CAP27) framework.

The MoU not only seeks immediate improvements and integration but also aims to lay down a joint roadmap for the long-term inclusion of Ukrainian dairy within the European Single Market, advocating for sustainable growth and mutual benefits.
