Delhi's Plan to Tackle Dairy Waste with Biogas and Sewage Projects

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has developed an extensive action plan aimed at mitigating the influx of dairy waste into the Yamuna River. This initiative involves the establishment of ten biogas plants and nine wastewater treatment plants. Additionally, the plan includes a significant overhaul of drainage systems within dairy colonies and the creation of sedimentation chambers.

According to MCD officials, the proposed biogas plants will be distributed across various sites, including Ghazipur dairy, Bhalswa dairy, and other locations, with capacities ranging from 50 to 200 tonnes per day (TPD). The collective land area for these installations spans approximately 35 acres, with six sites currently owned by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA).

Furthermore, the plan outlines the development of decentralized sewage treatment plant projects in several dairy colonies, with an anticipated total expenditure of ₹34 crore. These projects will feature treatment capacities of 100 kilolitres per day (KLD) and will be implemented in areas such as Nangli dairy farm, Goyla dairy, and Bhalswa dairy.

In a meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on July 11, 2025, the issue of dairy waste management was a focal point in the Yamuna rejuvenation action plan. The discussion emphasized the need for a multi-faceted approach to increase the capacity of sewage treatment plants, improve outflow quality, and manage dairy waste effectively.

Senior civic officials have highlighted the necessity of these projects, stating, "These initiatives will involve the development of new drains and sedimentation chambers to effectively separate and treat cattle dung, preventing it from entering the Yamuna River."

The MCD's efforts are part of a broader collaboration with the Delhi government and the National Dairy Development Board to address the environmental challenges posed by dairy waste and improve the overall water quality of the Yamuna.
