Danielle Hovmand Recognized as Top Emerging Leader in Agriculture
Danielle Hovmand, a Waikato dairy farmer, was awarded the Primary Industries New Zealand Emerging Leader Award at the eighth annual awards ceremony held in Auckland. The judges highlighted her selfless leadership qualities and her dedication to aiding others in their success. Hovmand, a 29-year-old 50/50 sharemilker and Federated Farmers Waikato sharefarmer chair, has been instrumental in the Morrinsville-Ngarua Young Farmers Club.
Hovmand was chosen over other notable finalists including James Robertson, chief of staff at Fonterra, and Ben Purua, the 2024 Ahuwhenua Young Māori Farmer of the Year. The judges noted the category's competitiveness and praised Hovmand’s unique ability to combine practical farming experience with a strong commitment to community service.
Farming and Community Engagement
Hovmand and her partner, Harry Phipps, manage a herd of approximately 250 cows near Morrinsville. Beyond her farming duties, she has raised significant funds for local causes, volunteered at community events, and promoted agricultural education through schools and local shows. Her advocacy efforts have strengthened connections within rural communities.
Her accolades include being named Auckland-Hauraki Farmer of the Year in 2022 and receiving the New Zealand Young Farmers Contiki Local Legend Award in 2024. Furthermore, she was a finalist in the ASB Alumni of the Year Award.
Advocacy and Policy Influence
Karl Dean, Federated Farmers dairy chair, commended Hovmand for her impactful contributions to the dairy sector, both on and off the farm. She played a pivotal role in campaigning for policy changes that allowed young farmers to use their KiwiSaver to purchase their first home or farm, a move celebrated by farmers nationwide. Hovmand is also recognized for her support of sharemilkers and contract milkers, emphasizing knowledge sharing to aid newcomers in the industry.
Recognition of Promising Leaders
The Emerging Leader Award, backed by Lincoln University, honors young individuals in the primary sector making significant contributions to the industry. Hovmand’s award reflects her leadership and the support she has received from her community. She expressed gratitude for those who have supported her journey, allowing her to take on leadership roles and achieve significant milestones.
