Cheese Sales Plummet by 40% Due to Low Demand

The cheese industry in Mazatlán has been faced with a substantial decrease in sales, plummeting by up to 40%, as reported by local producers. This decline is primarily attributed to reduced demand from businesses and restaurants. Furthermore, the ongoing drought has exacerbated the situation by affecting milk production.

Local dairy producer Salvador Osuna highlights the severe impacts on the sector, noting that the southern Sinaloa milk basin produces approximately 100,000 liters of milk daily, with 70% used for cheese and derivatives while the remainder is sent to pasteurization plants. "In recent weeks, we've observed some businesses scaling back their orders, which concerns us as the impact extends beyond cheesemakers to cattle breeders," Osuna mentioned.

The drought not only lowers demand but also causes challenges due to water scarcity in reservoirs. This shortage is affecting livestock, resulting in weight loss due to insufficient food and water, which might lead to further decreases in milk production.

The President of the Mazatlán Cattle Association, José Antonio Lizárraga Rivera, emphasized that the situation is particularly difficult for those dependent on fresh cheese sales. He urged both authorities and consumers to pay attention to the agricultural sector's plight in southern Sinaloa, a vital economic pillar.

Sales of fresh cheese have been notably affected, with Lizárraga Rivera noting conversations with the Cheese Union President indicating a significant drop in sales recently. The producers call for attention to these urgent issues, seeking support for the region, which is an economic mainstay in the state.
