Xizang Launches Innovative Research Model for Dairy Industry

In a significant development for the dairy industry on the plateau, the Xizang Autonomous Region in southwest China inaugurated a Science and Technology Backyard (STB) focused on dairy cows.
This initiative marks the introduction of an innovative model designed to enhance dairy farming in high-altitude environments.
Since 2023, China Agricultural University has been conducting a comprehensive scientific assessment of cows and dairy farms at a farming center and a pasture in Lhasa, the regional capital. The objective is to optimize feeding management practices and maximize the production potential of dairy cows in this challenging environment.
The Ministry of Education officially approved the establishment of the Xizang Chengguan plateau dairy cow STB at the end of 2023. By March 2024, scholars from China Agricultural University had begun their work on-site.
“Xizang’s high altitude and harsh climate lead to a high incidence of cerebral and pulmonary edema in dairy cows, which negatively impacts their productivity,” explained Fang Qianhai, a representative from the university. “In response, we have developed an early warning system for altitude sickness and innovatively designed a portable, wearable oxygen mask for cows.”
The STB serves as a frontline science and technology service platform, integrating agricultural innovation, demonstration, promotion, and talent development. This initiative is expected to play a pivotal role in advancing the dairy industry in high-altitude regions.
