World meat prices have continued to increase for the third month in a row, as evidenced by the April FAO food price report. The rise in the cost of chicken was the result of increased cases of avian influenza. There is also an increase in prices for beef and mutton. At the same time, pork prices decreased slightly due to low demand from China.
What is the situation on the meat market in Kazakhstan and the world?
"The average value of the FAO Meat Price Index in April was 116.3 points, which is 1.6% higher than in March. Thus, the growth of the value of this index continues for the third month in a row, while it turned out to be only slightly – 0.4% lower than in the corresponding period last year," the FAO report says.

Poultry meat prices on the global market rose in April, helped by stable import purchases from the Middle East due to production problems caused by avian influenza.

International beef prices have also increased, supported by high demand from major importers, despite an increase in domestic supply.

Lamb prices have recovered to some extent due to an expected seasonal reduction in Oceania supply.

However, global pork prices declined slightly due to weak domestic demand in Western Europe and unstable demand from major importers, especially China.

In Kazakhstan, the situation on the beef market suggests that meat exports have decreased in recent years. In 2019, about 40 thousand tons of beef in the form of meat and live cattle were supplied to the world market, while last year this volume did not exceed 20 thousand tons. This is due to various factors, including the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease and the introduction of restrictions on the supply of Kazakh meat to Russia and China.

Despite the difficulties, Kazakhstan continues to increase exports, redirecting them to Uzbekistan, the Arab Emirates and Kyrgyzstan. At the same time, beef production in the country is also growing, but the number of farms engaged in cattle breeding is decreasing, which may have an impact on the future of the industry.

"The manufacturer needs sales. Whether it's the domestic market, or the external one, we need sales. If we have a lot of pastures, a lot of cattle, we have to produce a lot of meat. Our population is small – 20 million people. In order for the industry to grow and develop, it is necessary to open export markets. First of all, China, Uzbekistan, and the Russian Federation are net importers of meat," said Maksut Baktibayev, Chairman of the Meat Union of Kazakhstan.

Although restrictions on the export of Kazakh meat to Russia and China have been lifted, so far only two enterprises are entering foreign markets. It is predicted that by the end of the year Kazakhstan will be able to send about 5,000 tons of beef to China, but this is only a small part of the total demand for meat in this country.
