Dr. Dennis Todey, Director of the USDA Midwest Climate Hub, delivered this forecast during a recent webinar hosted by the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation. He highlighted above-average temperatures expected for July, August, and September, particularly in the western regions of the country and upper New England states.

While the precipitation outlook appears neutral for most areas, certain regions along the eastern seaboard may experience above-average rainfall. Todey also noted a looming transition from a short-lived El Nino pattern to a La Nina pattern, likely occurring between June and August 2024.

The switch from El Nino to La Nina could have significant implications for weather patterns, with potential consequences for agricultural operations. Recent years of La Nina have been associated with dry conditions, exacerbating drought concerns in states like Iowa, Montana, New Mexico, and Texas.

Despite the uncertain precipitation outlook, Todey emphasized the importance of strategic planning for farmers. He advised adjusting yield goals, planting early to capitalize on spring moisture, reducing tillage to conserve moisture, and closely monitoring water sources for livestock and irrigation.

As farmers gear up for the planting season and beyond, they are bracing themselves for a summer of extreme weather conditions, with resilience and adaptation strategies at the forefront of their preparations.
