The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) confirmed the presence of avian flu in two dairy herds in each of the mentioned states, marking a significant development as it's the first instance of this strain being found in US livestock. The transmission is suspected to have occurred fr om wild birds, with deceased birds found on several affected farms, as reported by the agency. These findings emerged following extensive investigations by federal and state entities in Texas, Kansas, and New Mexico, prompted by reports of sick cows.

This revelation follows recent news from Minnesota, wh ere goats on a farm previously affected by bird flu in poultry also tested positive for the virus.

Despite these concerning developments, the USDA reassures the public that the commercial milk supply remains safe, with a minimal risk to consumers. Stringent protocols dictate that only milk from healthy cows enters the food chain, with any milk from unwell animals redirected or disposed of. Furthermore, pasteurization, a standard procedure for milk sold across state lines, effectively eliminates viruses and harmful bacteria.

The USDA emphasizes that there is currently no cause for concern regarding the safety of the commercial milk supply or its impact on consumer health.

Reports of dairy cows falling ill with a mysterious ailment prompted alarm among Texas dairy farmers three weeks ago. Commissioner Sid Miller of the Texas Department of Agriculture described the situation, noting a decline in milk production and signs of lethargy and reduced appetite among the cattle.
