Ted O'Sullivan, a progressive dairy farmer from Bansha, Tipperary, has taken a significant step towards sustainability and cost-efficiency by installing a state-of-the-art solar PV system on his farm.

Faced with escalating electricity bills, which at peak times soared to €1,400 per month, Ted sought the expertise of John Lowry from Home & Agri Energy.

John Lowry, an experienced energy engineer with a background in sustainable energy and international experience in the solar industry, guided Ted through the process. Together, they identified the farm's energy needs and the potential benefits of a solar PV system.

With assistance from Home & Agri Energy, Ted successfully applied for the TAMS Solar PV grant, receiving approval in April 2023. By May, 87 solar panels with a combined capacity of 40 KW were installed on Ted's farm sheds, strategically placed to optimize energy production for morning and evening milking sessions.

The results have been outstanding. In just six weeks, Ted's electricity costs have plummeted by 92%, reducing monthly bills from €1,400 to €90. The system also generated surplus energy, selling 1,400 units back to the grid at €0.21 per unit, yielding an additional €294.

The total investment of €65,000 is projected to pay for itself within two to three years, making this venture not only environmentally beneficial but also economically sound. As Ted O'Sullivan states, "It’s a no-brainer really."

This initiative underscores the growing potential of solar energy in agriculture, offering a blueprint for other farmers looking to reduce costs and embrace renewable energy solutions.
