In 2023, raw milk production in Estonia reached 895,000 tons, which is 5% higher than the previous year. This is the highest figure in the last 31 years.
Anton Kardakov, senior analyst at the Estonian Statistical Department, notes that although milk production reached such values for the last time in 1992, productivity is now three times higher. Previously, one cow produced 3,500 kg of milk per year, but now this figure has increased to 10,600 kg. The average productivity also increased by 5%.
The Statistics Department notes that data on milk production in other EU countries for 2023 have not yet been published. However, Estonia's results over the past year are likely to surpass those of some other countries, such as Denmark and the Netherlands.
Yarvamaa district, responsible for 17% of milk production and 16% of dairy cows in the country, is the leader in productivity, reaching 11,200 kg of milk per cow per year.
The annual productivity growth of 486 kg of milk has become a record over the past 20 years, which was facilitated by several leading players in the market, including Kaiu LT, whose average productivity was 14,500 kg of milk.
Exports of raw milk and cream for processing in 2023 amounted to about 211,000 tons, strengthening Estonia's position as a major exporter of dairy products in the region. These active exports bring in almost a quarter of the country's agricultural income, and the value of domestically produced dairy products reached 375 million euros last year.
