The Central Statistics Office Ireland (CSO) has revealed a substantial downturn in domestic milk intake for January 2024, with a stark 22.4% decrease compared to the same month in 2023. The data, released on March 6, indicates that milk processors and co-ops received an estimated 140.1 million litres during this period, reflecting a decline of 40.4 million litres.

This downturn is even more pronounced when compared with January 2022, as the figures show a notable 23.6% drop, equivalent to 43.2 million litres. The fat content for January 2024 remained steady at 4.50%, while the protein content experienced a slight decrease from 3.5% to 3.48% over the twelve-month period leading up to January 2024.

In 2023, the CSO estimates that domestic milk intake totaled nearly 8.5 billion litres, marking a 4.2% decline (366.3 million litres) compared to 2022. Additionally, this figure represents a 3.4% reduction (299.9 million litres) compared to the year 2021.

Milk destined for human consumption witnessed a decline in January 2024, reaching an estimated 38 million litres, indicating a 6% decrease (2.4 million litres) from the previous year. Within this category, whole milk sales accounted for 22.9 million litres (compared to 24.8 million in January 2023), while skimmed and semi-skimmed milk combined for 15.1 million litres (15.6 million in January 2023).
