The New Merchants of Doubt report exposes how, rather than acting to meaningfully reduce livestock emissions, Big Meat and Dairy use a smokescreen of weak voluntary targets, green marketing, and promises of future technological fixes that rarely materialize, while mobilizing significant lobbying resources behind the scenes to delay and derail progressive legislation, writes scoop.co.nz.

However, as the media did not see the necessity to gather comments fr om all involved parties, Dairynews.today requested a comment from Fonterra regarding the situation and the aforementioned report. The comment was provided by Fonterra Director of Sustainability, Charlotte Rutherford:

"We are still working through the details of the report, however we do not feel it is an accurate representation of wh ere Fonterra, one of the most emissions efficient producers of dairy at scale, is at.

We believe in working constructively with industry and Government to ensure emissions reduction strategies can deliver while also working towards helping New Zealand achieve its 2030 targets set under the Zero Carbon Act.

Reducing our impact on the environment is a key priority for Fonterra. We continue to make good progress in this. Last year we introduced an on farm emissions targets and an increase in Scope 1&2 targets. We have several decarbonisation projects on the go.

We’re working with farmers to help them reduce their emissions and investing signficantly in finding a solution to methane.

We do agree however that when it comes to sustainability there is always more to do and it’s up to all of us to play our part."
