Pea milk producer received $274 million in investments
Ripple Foods was founded in 2014. Produces milk and protein shakes from yellow peas. There are plenty of companies that make pea alternatives. In Russia, they also recently opened a plant for deep processing of peas. This is a valuable source of protein, but a problem that often arises with products containing peas is a specific flavor.
Ripple Foods managed to get rid of the smell and differentiate itself from competitors with the help of Ripple pea protein. The ingredient is produced using technology that eliminates flavonoids and tannins that can give plant milk an undesirable taste. At the same time, the beneficial substances of the original product are preserved. Purified protein is added to pea flour, mixed with water, sunflower oil, stabilizers and vitamins.
The result is “the purest tasting non-dairy milk.” A 220-gram serving contains 6 grams of protein—6 to 8 times more than almond milk. There is half as much sugar and 50% more calcium than cow milk. In general, in terms of the amount of microelements, pea milk is as close as possible to cow milk. Plus, the drink contains no allergens such as soy, nuts or dairy products. An ideal candidate for baby food.
It was the children's line that became the main driver of the company's growth. Ripple developed it together with pediatricians. In addition to 8 grams of vegetable protein from peas, 50 mg of DHA, the most important of the Omega-3 acids, was added to baby milk. It contains choline and prebiotic fiber, as well as nutrients found in regular milk - calcium, magnesium, vitamins A, D and B12. There is a savory and sweet version of the drink. Both have a creamy taste.
