Only a quarter of the milk produced in Kyrgyzstan is sent for processing, despite significant growth in production in recent years. The country's milk production volumes have increased by 1.8 times over the past six years, reaching about 1.7 million tons annually. However, only 20-25% of this volume is processed.
These figures were presented on August 14 during the discussion of the near-final version of the "Concept for the Development of the Dairy Industry of the Kyrgyz Republic," according to Dairynews.today.
At the meeting, which included representatives from the Ministry of Water Resources, Agriculture and Processing Industry, the Ministry of Economy and Commerce, the "Association for the Development of the Agro-Industrial Complex of the Kyrgyz Republic," the "Dairy Union of Kyrgyzstan," and Dairy Global Experts Ltd., it was noted that the main growth in milk production in the country is achieved through extensive methods—by increasing the livestock population rather than improving its productivity.
Moreover, a significant portion of the milk produced—75-80%—is consumed directly by the producers' families or sold in local markets, for which there is no precise statistical data. According to various sources, domestic consumption of milk and dairy products in Kyrgyzstan ranges from 650,000 to 1.4 million tons, of which only 311,000 tons undergo industrial processing.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture of Kyrgyzstan, the country fully meets its internal demand for milk and dairy products. It is estimated that by 2030, the domestic dairy market could increase by more than 1.5 times if the continuously growing urban population shifts to consuming industrially processed dairy products in line with recommended consumption norms. In the long term, the production volume of dairy products for the domestic market could reach 466,800 tons.
