In Northern Ireland, the dairy sector is poised for growth, with sustainability at the forefront of its agenda, says Ian Stevenson, Chief Executive of the Dairy Council for Northern Ireland (DCNI).

Stevenson emphasizes the importance of strategic planning for the sector's development, noting that growth must align with maintaining high milk quality and addressing environmental concerns.

With Northern Ireland's climate change legislation enacted, the dairy industry faces emission reduction targets set by the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA), alongside changes in farm support payments.

Transitioning from the Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) to the Farm Sustainability Payment (FSP) and introducing new initiatives like the Soil Nutrient Health Scheme and Ruminant Genetics Programme, among others, will significantly impact dairy producers.

The Dairy Council is actively engaged in shaping these measures to ensure they meet the needs of milk producers and promote sustainable farming practices.

Stevenson highlights Northern Ireland's involvement in DEFRA's Dairy Demonstrator Research Call, aimed at reducing emissions and enhancing environmental sustainability in dairy farming through research and innovation.

As these changes unfold, the Dairy Council's role will be pivotal in ensuring that support schemes are tailored to meet the evolving needs of dairy farmers, facilitating innovation and sustainable growth in the sector.
