The scheme, which will be in effect until October 1, 2029, will apply to small and medium-sized farms in priority areas, including peatlands, sandy soils, and stream valleys, as well as specially protected Natura 2000 areas within the European Union.

To be eligible for compensation, farmers must meet certain criteria regarding annual emissions, indicating that the closure of their operation will have a significant positive impact on the environment. The funds can cover up to 100% of the costs associated with ceasing operations.

Previously, the European Union approved an initiative by the Dutch government that allows livestock farmers to be compensated for relocating their businesses from environmentally protected areas to other regions of the country.
