The decline affected nearly all types of livestock except camels, whose numbers rose by 1.4% to 480,600. The horse population stands at 4.7 million, cattle at 5.1 million, sheep at 24.5 million, and goats at 22.9 million.

Regional Leaders in Livestock Population

The Khuvsgul province leads in livestock numbers, with 5.2 million animals. It is followed by Uvurkhangai (5.1 million), Tuv (4.2 million), Arkhangai (4.1 million), and Bayankhongor (4.0 million).

Arkhangai province ranks first in horse and cattle numbers, Umnugovi leads in camel population, Uvurkhangai in sheep, and Bayankhongor in goats.

Causes of Decline

Experts attribute the decrease to adverse weather conditions and shrinking pasturelands. "The dzud and drought in central and southern regions of the country have had a significant impact on the livestock sector," noted a researcher from Mongolia's Agricultural Institute.

Economic Implications

The drop in livestock numbers is expected to affect Mongolia’s economy, where animal husbandry remains a vital sector. The government is considering support measures for herders, including feed subsidies and pasture restoration programs.

Economists warn that the decline will likely impact exports of wool, meat, and dairy products, posing additional challenges for the sector.
