Moldovan Dairy and Poultry Prices Climb Amid Rising Costs

Several types of dairy products and poultry meat produced in the Republic of Moldova have seen a price hike of 2 to 5% over the course of a week. According to Mold-street, a trusted source of local news, the price of poultry fillet from Floreni, Moldova\'s largest poultry producer, has risen by more than 5%, reaching 104 lei per kilogram at major retail chains.

Likewise, dairy products have not been spared from the upward trend. For instance, a 300-gram package of 30% fat cream from JLC Group, the leading dairy producer in Moldova, now costs 30.20 lei, marking a 4.1% increase. Several other dairy products from the same producer have also shown price increases ranging from 2% to 4%.

The cited source highlights several factors contributing to these price hikes. One of the primary reasons is the escalation in natural gas tariffs by approximately 33% from December 1, 2024, followed by significant increases in heating tariffs and regulated electricity prices, which are expected to rise by 50% and over 70%, respectively, from January 10, 2025. These increases in utility costs have, in turn, driven up production costs for local producers.

Moreover, there is an additional pressure on producers to elevate wages, correlating with the 10% increase in the minimum wage across the economy effective January 1, 2025. As a result, producers are facing a dual challenge of maintaining profitability while adhering to new wage standards.
