METRO Germany has become the first wholesaler globally to stock Frischain, an animal-free cream cheese produced by German startup Formo. Made using microfermentation, Frischain leverages koji fungi proteins—traditionally used in products like soy sauce and sake—to create a cheese alternative nearly identical to traditional cream cheese.

The product is available in 1.5 kg catering containers across METRO’s 102 stores and 11 delivery depots in Germany, catering to the rising demand for vegan products in the foodservice industry. Bianca Hirsch, a representative of METRO Germany, highlighted the product’s relevance for restaurateurs and hoteliers aiming to meet the evolving dietary needs of their customers.

Formo, known for its innovation in animal-free dairy alternatives, partnered with precision fermentation experts Those Vegan Cowboys to scale production and target price parity with traditional milk proteins. CEO Raffael Wohlgensinger emphasized the company’s mission to deliver high-quality, sustainable cheese alternatives free from lactose, gluten, hormones, and antibiotics.

The introduction of Frischain marks a significant step in METRO’s commitment to expanding its plant-based product range and meeting growing consumer interest in sustainable and ethical food options.
