Kazakhstan's trade turnover with EAEU countries fell by 12% to $6.1 billion

According to preliminary data from the Bureau of National Statistics, Kazakhstan's foreign trade turnover for January-March 2024 amounted to $31.2 billion, which is 5.6% less compared to the same period in 2023. The share of trade with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) countries was 19.6%, reaching $6.1 billion, which also shows a decrease of 12.4%.
Regionally, Almaty leads with a trade turnover with EAEU countries amounting to $1.6 billion, accounting for 26.7%. Other leading regions include:
Astana – $1.2 billion (18.8%),
Karaganda Region – $608.2 million (9.9%),
Pavlodar Region – $439.7 million (7.2%).
These regions demonstrate the highest activity in trade with EAEU countries, highlighting their importance in the country's economy. The figures for Almaty and Astana are particularly notable, together accounting for nearly half of the total trade turnover with EAEU countries, indicating a high concentration of trade activity in these major cities.
In the overall volume of Kazakhstan's foreign trade turnover with EAEU countries, the Russian Federation holds the largest share at 91.5%, followed by the Kyrgyz Republic at 5.5%, the Republic of Belarus at 2.9%, and the Republic of Armenia at 0.1%.
In trade with EAEU countries, imports predominate, accounting for 65.3%. From January to March 2024, imports amounted to $4 billion, which is 5.1% less compared to the previous year. Finished food products constitute 20.9% ($836.1 million) of the main goods in the import structure.
Exports to EAEU countries for the specified period amounted to $2.1 billion, which is 23.6% less compared to the same period in 2023. The reduction in exports is associated with a 33% decrease in the volume of machinery and equipment exports, as well as a 30% reduction in chemical products.
