Inyange Industries Ltd has officially opened a new $54 million powdered milk processing facility in Nyagatare District, Eastern Province of Rwanda, marking a significant advancement in the country’s dairy sector.
Inyange Industries Launches Rwanda's First Milk Powder Plant
This first-of-its-kind plant in Rwanda is set to produce a range of dairy products including skimmed and whole powdered milk, butter, ghee, and other ultra-high temperature (UHT) milk products.

The facility boasts a capacity to process 650,000 liters of raw milk each day, translating to an impressive daily production of approximately 41 tonnes of milk powder, 25.6 tonnes of butter, and 11.3 tonnes of ghee. This development is particularly beneficial for local dairy farmers, especially in the Eastern Province where nearly 70% of Rwanda's cattle population is concentrated. It ensures a stable and reliable market for their milk, potentially improving their income through enhanced negotiating power over milk prices.

Moreover, the presence of this plant is poised to have a profound impact on the Rwandan market, which has been dominated by expensive imported powdered milk products from brands like Nido, Lato, and others. These products are currently sold at prices ranging from Rwf80,000 to Rwf90,000 for a 2.5kg package, which is beyond the reach of many Rwandan consumers.

Inyange plans to offer a more affordable alternative, targeting a retail price of about $3.5 (approximately Rwf4,600) per kilogram of powdered milk starting August. This pricing strategy is expected to make powdered milk accessible to a broader segment of the population, providing a cost-effective option with a long shelf life, which is ideal for storage.

This strategic move not only supports the local dairy farming community by providing a substantial new outlet for their milk but also aligns with broader economic goals by reducing dependency on imported goods, thereby fortifying Rwanda’s dairy sector and offering economic relief to consumers.
