The Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers’ Association (ICMSA) has urged dairy processors to pay farmers a minimum of 48 cents per liter (c/L) for September milk, citing recent market improvements. According to ICMSA dairy chairperson Noel Murphy, milk prices need to reflect the advancements seen in dairy markets during August and September, highlighting that farmers require these increases to address rising financial pressures.
ICMSA Demands Irish Dairy Processors Raise September Milk Prices to 48c/L

“While milk prices did see a minor increase in August, the adjustment fell short of what was needed given the scale of market improvement,” Murphy said. He emphasized the critical role that co-op boards play in ensuring fair compensation for farmers, as these market-based prices are essential for addressing outstanding bills and debts accumulated over the past year.

The ICMSA pointed out that dairy commodity prices have climbed significantly. For example, Dutch butter prices rose from €6,820 per ton on July 31 to €8,000 per ton by October 2—a 17% increase. Whole milk powder prices also saw an increase from €3,860 to €4,410 per ton, with skim milk powder rising from €2,330 to €2,520 per ton in the same period. These figures, Murphy argued, “clearly support the ICMSA’s stance that farmers’ payments should reflect market gains.”

The association asserts that farmers should have received 48c/L for August milk and insists this rate is “absolutely due” for September. Murphy concluded, “Farmers have faced a challenging year, and these market-based prices are necessary for financial stability. The ICMSA expects that processors will step up to ensure that farmers receive what they are owed.”
