ICMSA Calls for Milk Price Increase Amid Dairy Market Rebound

The Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers’ Association (ICMSA) is urging co-ops and milk buyers to raise October milk prices, citing a “mini rally” in dairy markets. Noel Murphy, chair of the ICMSA’s dairy committee, emphasized that the current market uplift must be reflected in the prices paid to farmers, noting concerns about inconsistent pricing across co-ops.
“There are only two payments left this year, so it’s crucial that prices realign to reflect market conditions,” Murphy stated. He highlighted favorable autumn weather as a major advantage for farmers, allowing for significant fodder savings and an increase in milk production. This comes as a welcome relief following a challenging spring and summer, which placed financial and emotional strain on many farmers.
Dairy markets have shown steady gains, with higher prices allowing farmers to pay down debts accrued during the earlier difficult period. Murphy stressed that co-ops and processors need to recognize this positive shift and pass on the benefits to farmer-suppliers, especially as recent price gains in butter markets signal growing strength across dairy products.
The Ornua Purchase Price Index (PPI) showed another rise in October, supported by a positive Global Dairy Trade (GDT) auction, reflecting renewed confidence and increasing production volumes. Murphy noted that these indicators should give farmers an opportunity to benefit from higher prices tied to the increased output.
“With market conditions improving and co-ops seeing gains, we fully expect all processors to deliver corresponding increases in payments to suppliers,” he said.
