In a move welcomed by the Deputy President of ICMSA, Eamon Carroll, the Minister for Agriculture, Food, and Marine's decision to grant an exemption to the 15% crude protein requirement post-April 15 for farmers operating above 130kgs of N per hectare has been met with approval. However, Mr. Carroll stressed the need for simplification in the application process.

While acknowledging the necessity of the extension, Mr. Carroll expressed reservations regarding the additional paperwork introduced by the Department, requiring FAS advisors or nutritionists to endorse the need for a higher crude protein concentrate post-April 15, 2024.

Mr. Carroll suggested a straightforward alteration of the deadline from April 15 to May 1, eliminating the need for a cumbersome paper trail. He emphasized that farmers, grappling with the repercussions of inclement weather and financial strain, already face formidable challenges without the added administrative burden. Involving advisors during one of the busiest periods of the year, he argued, is counterproductive and fails to serve the interests of farmers or the environment.

While lauding the exemption as a necessary step, ICMSA advocates for procedural adjustments to facilitate a more efficient and farmer-friendly process. By extending the deadline and removing unnecessary paperwork, the Minister can alleviate the burden on farmers and assist them in navigating the formidable challenges they currently confront.

In conclusion, the ICMSA Deputy President urged the Minister to prioritize practical solutions that address the pressing needs of farmers during this critical period.
