HHS Enables FDA Emergency Use of Animal Drugs Against New World Screwworm
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has taken a significant step to protect the nation's livestock and food supply from the impending threat posed by the New World Screwworm (NWS). On August 19, 2025, HHS authorized the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to issue Emergency Use Authorizations (EUAs) specifically for animal drugs intended to manage NWS infestations. NWS, a parasite that causes severe tissue damage in warm-blooded animals and occasionally humans, is not currently found in North America but is progressing northward.

While the risk to human health is considered low, safeguarding animal populations and thereby securing the food supply chain is paramount. Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. emphasized this proactive measure as crucial for national security and animal health. Currently, there are no FDA-approved drugs targeting NWS in the U.S., prompting the EUA to enable the use of drugs approved elsewhere or for other purposes, providing veterinarians and farmers the necessary means to protect livestock. The FDA will offer guidance on using these authorized products appropriately to maintain public and agricultural health.
