In a pioneering move, GEA is set to utilize its first batch of "green stainless steel" supplied by Klöckner & Co at its production site in Bönen, Germany. The sustainable stainless steel coil, delivered by Klöckner & Co's German subsidiary Becker Stainless, will be incorporated into GEA's machinery, particularly focusing on milking technology in a pilot project.

The carbon footprint of this "green stainless steel" is impressively 90 percent less than its conventionally produced counterpart, aligning with GEA's commitment to sustainable practices. The initiative is part of GEA's Climate Transition Plan 2040, wherein the company aims to replace raw materials with environmentally friendly alternatives.

According to the "Product Carbon Footprint Declaration," the stainless steel coil falls within the "Pro" category of Klöckner & Co's Nexigen® system, signifying a carbon footprint of fewer than 700 kg per ton of stainless steel across Scopes 1 to 3.

Dr. Nadine Sterley, Chief Sustainability Officer at GEA, emphasized the importance of "green stainless steel" in achieving their climate targets: "As long as no other alternative to this material is available, green stainless steel is the best option for GEA. Starting now, we are adding it to our raw materials mix and will steadily increase the proportion it accounts for to reduce the emissions in our supply chain."

The collaboration with suppliers like Klöckner & Co is integral to GEA's sustainable procurement strategy. Johannes Giloth, COO of GEA, stressed the significance of sustainable partnerships and efficient solutions to contribute to greener supply chains. Klöckner & Co CEO Guido Kerkhoff expressed satisfaction that GEA, a long-standing partner, has chosen their CO2-reduced stainless steel, affirming Klöckner & Co's commitment to facilitating greener supply chains under the Nexigen® umbrella brand.
