Negotiations between the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament concluded in March 2024, marking a crucial step towards implementing comprehensive reforms.

The finalized Regulation, currently undergoing legal scrutiny, is poised to set ambitious waste reduction targets and overhaul packaging standards across the EU. Among its key provisions, the Regulation mandates that all packaging introduced to the EU market must be recyclable and prominently labeled for recycling purposes.

Moreover, the Regulation imposes stringent requirements for packaging reduction, aiming to minimize waste generation. It also sets minimum thresholds for recycled content in plastic packaging, bolstering efforts to promote sustainability and circularity in the packaging sector.

In addition to these measures, the Regulation introduces targets for packaging re-use and imposes bans on certain packaging formats deemed environmentally detrimental.
