Joining hands with fellow community members, the Hammonds actively contribute to safeguarding and enhancing the Pāpāwai stream and adjacent bush block. Led by John Argue and a dedicated committee, the Pāpāwai Care group has been steadfast in its efforts, undertaking annual plantings and managing existing vegetation.

Reflecting on their involvement, Rachel highlights the legacy of community engagement, tracing back to Hamish's grandfather, Malcolm Hammond, who played a role in the group's early initiatives.

"For us, volunteering brings immense satisfaction, fostering connections with fellow locals," Rachel shares.

On their farm, the Hammonds employ diverse pasture species, including the Ecotain plantain, supported by DairyNZ-led research indicating its role in reducing nitrogen loss while sustaining milk production.

Conscious of water management, the couple adopts efficient irrigation practices, closely monitoring water application through soil moisture probes to optimize usage and minimize wastage. Additionally, embracing a once-a-day milking regimen has halved daily water consumption at the dairy shed, further demonstrating their commitment to sustainability.

"We recognize the integral link between a thriving environment and successful farming practices, aspiring to leave behind a legacy for our children," Rachel affirms.

Actively engaged in advocacy, Hamish contributes to the Wairarapa Water Users Society, championing evidence-based decision-making and promoting best irrigation practices through training initiatives.

Aligning with their commitment to sustainability, the Hammonds have undertaken extensive planting along stream boundaries, providing crucial shade and shelter for livestock.

"In everything we do, from breeding top-quality cows to optimizing feed and fertilizer usage, our goal is a resilient and sustainable farming business," Hamish emphasizes.

Armed with master's degrees from Massey University, the couple channels their expertise into dairy farming, embracing the rewarding blend of mental and physical work.

Their farm's proximity to Greytown fosters a unique rural-urban synergy, inspiring the Hammonds to engage with diverse audiences and promote the dairy sector's appeal, particularly among young individuals.

"We aim to inspire the next generation, showcasing the rewarding lifestyle of farming and fostering greater involvement in the dairy industry," Rachel concludes, underscoring the farm's role as an idyllic environment for raising a family immersed in nature.
