A recent survey of Wisconsin’s dairy farmers has provided valuable insights into the priorities and trends within the state’s agricultural community. Wisconsin Agriculture Secretary Randy Romanski emphasized that the survey results underscore key areas where the state can continue to support its dairy farmers, particularly in the realms of soil and water health and animal welfare.

"A very clear indication from the survey is that soil and water health, along with animal health, remain top priorities for Wisconsin farmers," Romanski said in an interview with Brownfield. He noted that nearly all respondents affirmed their commitment to sustainable practices and responsible land stewardship.

The survey revealed that family ownership remains a cornerstone of Wisconsin’s dairy industry. Ninety-nine percent of respondents reported operating family-owned farms, and 97% indicated they have at least one other family member working on the farm. “Wisconsin is the home to the family farm,” Romanski remarked, highlighting the resilience and dedication of multi-generational farm operations in the state.

Wisconsin’s dairy farmers are also increasingly embracing state-supported sustainability initiatives. Romanski pointed to the success of programs like the Producer-led Watershed Grant Program, which has seen significant growth in participation. “These programs are popular because the farmers themselves are driving the successes in these operations,” he noted, suggesting that the collective effort of Wisconsin farmers is making a meaningful impact on environmental conservation.

Additionally, the state’s new cover crop reimbursement program appears to be gaining traction. Romanski believes this initiative is helping to expand cover crop acreage across Wisconsin, promoting soil health and reducing erosion.

Overall, the survey reflects a strong commitment among Wisconsin dairy farmers to both preserving family farm traditions and adopting innovative practices that support environmental sustainability. The state’s agricultural agency aims to continue fostering these priorities to enhance the resilience and productivity of Wisconsin’s dairy sector.
