The application for this official designation was filed with the Government of India's Intellectual Property registry on April 9, 2024, under Class 29 for foodstuffs. This move aims to protect the unique heritage and traditional production methods of the butter, which have been a staple in the region for centuries.

The butter is integral to the local economy of Uthukuli Taluk, where multi-generational dairy farming and specialized butter processing have long been economic mainstays. Uthukuli Vennai is celebrated for its distinctive taste and cultural significance, often used in traditional South Indian dishes like idlis, dosas, and pongal, as well as in festive sweets.

Unlike industrially produced butter, Uthukuli Vennai is made at a small scale, with local farmers sourcing milk from nearby supplies. This approach preserves the natural supply chain and ensures minimal intervention in the production process, which is believed to maintain the butter's native aroma and creaminess.
