Organic dairy farmers in Pennsylvania and Maryland who supply Grade A milk are encouraged to participate in a new initiative aimed at enhancing market reports and understanding organic milk pricing. The USDA Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS), with support from the Center for Dairy Excellence, is gathering anonymous data to assist in creating more accurate programs tailored to organic milk pricing.

The information collected will be reported anonymously and in aggregate, ensuring the privacy of participating farmers. This initiative seeks to bridge the gap in pricing information, which is currently based primarily on conventional milk data through programs like Dairy Margin Coverage (DMC).

Valerie Mason-Faith, Risk Education Manager at the Center for Dairy Excellence, explained, “The goal of this project is to help organizations develop better-targeted programs for organic dairies by understanding how organic milk is priced. Collecting data directly from producers will enable more tailored programs for the organic dairy sector.”

Organic dairy farmers who wish to participate in this project are asked to provide the following information:

  • Net mailbox price
  • Butterfat percentage
  • Protein percentage
  • Monthly milk volume
  • Number of lactating cows

This data will help build comprehensive reports like the Pennsylvania Organic Dairy Market News Report.
