U.S. Senators Reintroduce CURD Act to Support Wisconsin Dairy Industry

In a bipartisan effort to support the Wisconsin dairy industry, U.S. Senators Ron Johnson (R-WI) and Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), along with four other senators, have reintroduced the Codifying Useful Regulatory Definitions (CURD) Act.

The CURD Act seeks to establish a statutory definition of 'natural cheese,' a term historically used by cheesemakers to identify products made directly from milk with basic ingredients. Under this act, any food that fails to meet the defined criteria for 'natural cheese' will be considered misbranded if it uses the term on its label.

'Wisconsin is known for cheese, in all its forms and varieties,' remarked Sen. Johnson. 'Codifying the definition of “natural cheese” will provide American consumers with necessary information and clarity to make informed decisions on whether they are purchasing natural or processed foods.'

Senator Baldwin emphasized the importance of this legislation for Wisconsin's economy: 'Wisconsin’s dairy farmers and cheesemakers work hard to produce high-quality cheese products that are known across the globe and move our ‘Made in Wisconsin’ economy forward. This legislation honors their celebrated products and ensures consumers know which products meet the definition of “natural cheese.”'

Joining Senators Baldwin and Johnson on this initiative are Senators Ron Wyden (D-OR), James Risch (R-ID), Mike Crapo (R-ID), and Bernie Sanders (I-VT).
