Tetra Pak has announced a strategic decision to close its packaging material production facility in Jurong, Singapore, consolidating operations into other regional factories within the next 12 months. This move aligns with Tetra Pak's ongoing strategy to enhance its global manufacturing footprint, better serve customers, and adapt to evolving market dynamics. The company will maintain a robust business presence in Singapore, supporting global growth through essential operational functions, including business management, project centers, IT, human resources, finance, and marketing.
The Jurong-based Tetra Pak Packaging Materials factory, operational since 1982, has played a crucial role in supplying customers in Singapore and serving as an export hub. However, recognizing the substantial shifts in market dynamics, Tetra Pak emphasizes the need for adaptability to remain competitive while ensuring a delicate balance between market demands, industrial optimization, and operational cost efficiency.
Employee Support and Collaboration with FDAWU
Tetra Pak is dedicated to supporting the approximately 300 impacted employees, going beyond statutory requirements to ensure they are treated with respect and care. Discussions are underway to provide new opportunities or outplacement support. Collaborating closely with the Food, Drinks and Allied Workers Union (FDAWU) in Singapore, Tetra Pak is adhering to Tripartite guidelines, consulting with the union ahead of the official announcement.
Tetra Pak will utilize NTUC's e2i and partner with Workforce Singapore and NTUC LearningHub to organize a job fair facilitating career conversion and offering onsite training for affected employees. The company will also explore opportunities for employees to apply for other positions within Tetra Pak, locally or regionally.
Despite the operational changes, Tetra Pak remains steadfast in its commitment to serving customers in Singapore and the wider region with unwavering quality and reliability. Leveraging its global manufacturing footprint, the company assures continuous customer support.
Singapore as a Key Business Hub
Tetra Pak plans to relocate its corporate office to a new Singapore location by year-end, creating one of its largest offices in the Asia Pacific region, accommodating up to 250 people. This move underscores Tetra Pak's commitment to Singapore as a key location for business management within its global operations.
