Robotic Dairy Finds Success Without Serving Pellets
In a notable shift from traditional dairy practices, Heeg Brothers Dairy near Colby, Wisconsin, has managed to train their cows to use robotic milkers without relying on pelletized treats.

According to Jay Heeg, the farm's robotic barn, built in late 2023, operates on a guided-flow free stall setup, eliminating the need for pellets. This unconventional method was inspired by a consultant from Colorado and has proved effective, leading to lower wait times and stable cow health.

Although this approach requires more forage, it ultimately results in cost savings and streamlined operations. The operation currently milks 1,050 cows in its parlor and 450 in the robot barn, with the latter producing an average of 98 pounds of milk at 4.5% butterfat.
