RFK Jr. Advocates for More Dairy in U.S. Dietary Guidelines
Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has announced an initiative to expand dairy recommendations in U.S. dietary guidelines, which are due for an update later this year. Currently, the guidelines suggest that Americans aged nine and older consume three servings of dairy daily. During a recent news conference, Kennedy emphasized the surge in scientific research advocating for increased intake of protein and fats, areas where he claims dairy excels.
  • The current guidelines allow for dairy alternatives such as lactose-free and fortified soy products.
  • Nutrition experts agree that dairy can be part of a healthy diet, providing nutrients like calcium, magnesium, potassium, protein, and vitamins A and D.
  • Studies have shown that dairy consumption can reduce blood pressure and body fat, while also being linked to a lower risk of stroke.
However, those with lactose intolerance or dairy allergies, as well as those following specific cultural dietary practices, may opt for dairy alternatives. The debate around saturated fats, which are present in full-fat dairy, continues, with some studies suggesting minimal difference between full-fat and reduced-fat dairy in terms of health outcomes. Kennedy's proposal suggests maintaining the recommendation of three daily servings but stresses the inclusion of fermented dairy products like yogurt and cheese to harness their unique probiotic benefits.
