On March 20, 2025, in Mexico, Senator José Sabino Herrera Dagdug put forward a proposal to designate February 27th each year as the "National Day of Animal Protein."

This initiative aims to acknowledge the critical role that animal proteins play in nutrition, health, and the economic development of the country. Animal-derived proteins are essential for cognitive, muscular, and immune development, especially during childhood, adolescence, and old age. The proposal cites reports from the FAO, UNICEF, and other health organizations warning about the risks of malnutrition and undernutrition resulting from insufficient consumption of animal protein, which can negatively impact growth, academic performance, and mental health.

As Herrera Dagdug states, the production of animal protein in Mexico reached 11.8 million tons in the first half of 2023, marking a 1.3% growth from the previous year. The senator highlights that recognizing the importance of animal protein goes beyond just diet and economic value; it also drives the development of sustainable production strategies.
